McCAUSLAND Passenger family - 1718 ‘Robert’

There are two related McCausland families in Ulster, Ireland during the early 1700’s (the Robert McCausland line on the Bann River area -near Limavady / Coleraine and the Oliver McCausland line on the Foyle River - near Ardstraw / Strabane). Both families are 2nd generation descendants from an Andrew M’Ausland who emigrated to the North of Ireland in the early 1600’s from their ancestral homelands in the Loch Lomond area of Scotland.

All the Maine McCausland’s are directly descended from James McCausland Sr. who came from Ulster aboard the ship ‘Robert’ (one of two ships to Maine in the Fall of 1718) and he stayed in the Casco Bay area. In 1720, he was deeded four acres of land on what is now Congress Street in Portland where the modern day “Time & Temperature” building now sits. James Sr. is recorded in Col. Samuel Moody’s militia company that came to the relief of Somerset and Brunswick in July 1722, Capt. Joshua Moody’s company in 1725, and Capt. Woodside’s company in 1726-27.

James Sr. and wife Mary, had at least two sons; Henry - born 1722 and James, Jr.  born 1724, and possibly a daughter Anna born 1734 – all born in Falmouth, Maine. In 1729, James Sr. sold property in Falmouth and in 1745 he sold a portion of his land in Falmouth to his two sons. The dates of James Sr. birth in Ireland and death in Maine are unknown.

The emigrant James Sr. sons, James Jr. and Henry Sr. held several parcels of land in Falmouth & North Yarmouth in the mid 1740’s and 1750’s; they were described as Yeoman and Mariner respectively. In 1760, they moved together as members of the seven founding settler families of Gardiner, District of Maine. They eventually operated sawmills on Cobbosseecontee Stream, being listed as carpenters and sawmill workers.

James Jr. (1724-1781) married Mary Jane Poor in 1746 and they had three children: William -died young in 1777. Alexander (1763-1853) married 1787 to Abigail Gray and had 11 children – Family tradition holds that this Alexander was a drummer boy in the American Revolution, and James III (1750-1826) served in the Continental Army for three years, returned to marry Mary Berry in 1781, and had nine` children.

Henry Sr.(1722-1798) married Elizabeth Wyman in 1749 and had ten children: Robert M. (1747-1845), a Revolutionary War pensioner, Anna (1750), Sally (1752-1800), Jane (1753-1818), Gardiner (1755), Catherine (1757-1839), Polly (1757), Andrew (1758-1810) served as artificer on Arnolds’ expedition to Quebec in 1775, Henry Jr. (1759-1829) married to Abiel Stackpole and served in the American Revolution War.
