The Ulster-Scots of Maine – First Families

The overriding mission of the Maine Ulster-Scots Project is to save and share Maine’s Scots-Irish heritage.  Since its formation in 2006, MUSP has collected stories on the first families from Ulster to the coast of Maine, mostly done by recreational genealogists. We hope you will find this information presented here helpful with your own research.

In his 2001 book: “The People with No Name”, Patrick Griffin wrote that “between 1718 and 1775, more than 300,000 men and women journeyed from the Irish province of Ulster to the American colonies.  Their migration represented the single largest movement of any group from the British Isles to British North America during the eighteenth century. In a first wave beginning in 1718 and cresting in 1729, these people outnumbered all others sailing across the Atlantic, with the notable exception of those bound to the New World in slave ships.”

Over the coming months, MUSP will be developing and redesigning our website with far more in-depth information and research we have been SAVING. However, we want to SHARE with you just a taste of what will be coming.  Therefore, we offer over 200 brief family digests of some of the first Ulster-Scots and Scottish families to Maine.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the many that have contributed to this effort and specifically wish to thank our dear friend and MUSP Vice-President, Bill McKeen for years of dedication and hard work in putting together these family summaries.

Disclaimer:

The Maine Ulster-Scots Project (MUSP) shares research with anyone interested in the eighteenth century emigration from Ulster in the North of Ireland to that portion of the United States of America now known as the State of Maine. We request that those receiving information from us, in return, share any information they have with MUSP. In this way, MUSP has acquired a large volume of information on individual emigrants and families that may be hard to find anywhere else. To those amateur and professional contributors, we are sincerely grateful.

NOTE: MUSP does not conduct genealogical research. We do gather information supplied by others. MUSP does NOT guarantee the accuracy of the data and the users of this data do so at their own risk.

It is our hope and belief that the information provided may be a helpful aid for those doing their own research and whom will do their own investigation and due diligence in determining the accuracy and completeness of the data.

The following digest include many of those who arrived in New England between 1718 and 1763. These are only a guide and may require you to do further research. If you have further, or more accurate information, we would be pleased if you would share it with us. This is an ongoing process. You may contact MUSP at info@maineulsterscots.com

NOTE: MUSP is not aware of any passenger ship lists for those arriving in Maine between 1718 and 1763.
